Visit Horsham > News > Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens: A vibrant autumn awaits

Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens, a historic estate spanning 240-acres, becomes ablaze with colour in autumn.

Nestled in a picturesque valley within the West Sussex High Weald National Landscape, the gardens offer a breathtaking display of fiery reds, oranges, golds, and bronzes, many of which are reflected in the serene waters of its seven lakes.

Beyond the vibrant foliage, the estate is a haven for wildlife. Deer roam the woodlands, birdsong fills the air, and fascinating fungi emerges from the woodland floor. Visitors can enjoy peaceful walks through ancient woodlands, explore the estate’s champion trees, and observe the natural world at its finest.

Key highlights of this autumn season include:

Autumnal foliage: As the leaves of deciduous trees change color, the gardens become a kaleidoscope of reds, oranges, and golds, contrasting beautifully with the evergreen trees.
One of the highlights of this year's autumn display are the fiery acers. With over 100 across the estate, visitors can pick up a seasonal guide at reception to discover some of the most stunning colours in the gardens, including:
•    The Japanese Maple, Acer palmatum ‘Seiryu’: A British and Irish Champion Tree, this tree bursts into a dazzling firework of color in the Rock Garden.
•    Acer x zoeschense: Found in the valley along the Garden Walk, this County Champion Tree boasts brilliant yellow foliage.
•    Acer buergerianum: Offers a fiery mix of reds and oranges.
No visit to Leonardslee lakes & Gardens would be complete without exploring Acer Walk.  Here, visitors will find a diverse collection of maple species and cultivars, including the unusual variegation of Acer pseudoplatanus ‘Simon-Louis Freres’ and the deep purple hues of Acer platanoides ‘Crimson King’.

Wildlife: Witness the majestic rutting season of deer and keep an eye out for migrating birds from the far north, such as Siskins and Lesser Redpolls, as they feed on seeds among the treetops. While Fieldfares and Redwings find refuge in the valley.

Fungi: Discover the enchanting world of fungi and join guided walks to explore the estate’s diverse array of fungi, ranging from cauliflower fungus to the well-known fly agaric.  Learn about their ecological roles and more!

Champion trees: Explore the estates collection of extraordinary giants recognised as champion trees by the Tree Register – meaning that they have the tallest or have the largest girth in either the county, the country or even all of Britain and Ireland. The estate has over 100 trees with champion status throughout the gardens.

Family fun: Enjoy our new expansive Play Park – designed to spark imagination, ignite adventure, and foster intergenerational play.
Seasonal dining: Another new addition to the estate is our recently refurbished cafe, The Clocktower Kitchen. Savour delicious seasonal dishes including favourites such as scampi & chips, fish & chips, hunters chicken schnitzel, and pizza. For Sunday lunch, enjoy a dry aged local beef rump, chestnut and seed roast, a herb seasoned roast chicken breast and more.
